Getting Started with Algo Trading in MetaTrader: Configuring Settings and Launching the IDE

Watch on YouTube: Getting Started with MQL4: Configuring Settings and Launching MetaEditor

To get started with algorithmic trading in MetaTrader, it’s essential to first configure the platform for automated trading and then understand how to use MetaEditor, the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) where you’ll create, edit, and test your trading programs.

Step 1: Configuring Algo Trading Settings

  1. Enable Algo Trading: Open MetaTrader, go to “Tools” > “Options” (Ctrl+O), and find the “Expert Advisors” tab. In this tab, enable “Allow Automated Trading” to authorize your Expert Advisors (EAs) to trade without manual intervention. Automated trading allows EAs to execute trades based on programmed strategies rather than waiting for user approval each time a condition is met.
  2. Adjust Permissions and Restrictions: Ensure that settings like “Disable automated trading when switching accounts” or “Disable automated trading when changing profile” are configured to suit your needs. Disabling these restrictions can help the EA continue running without interruptions. This configuration ensures continuity, which is especially useful when running multiple strategies on one account or frequently adjusting the workspace layout.
  3. Enable DLL Imports (Optional): If your Expert Advisor relies on external DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries), make sure “Allow DLL imports” is enabled in the same settings tab. DLLs can extend functionality by providing additional libraries or enabling more advanced analytics but should only be allowed if you trust the source, as they can access system resources.

For the following chapters we’ll check only the “Allow Automated Trading” box.

Step 2: Opening MetaEditor

To start creating your trading strategies, you’ll need to open MetaEditor:

  1. Launch MetaEditor: In MetaTrader, click the “MetaEditor” icon from the toolbar, or press the F4 key. This action opens MetaEditor, which is specifically designed to build, test, and manage code for EAs, scripts, custom indicators, and libraries.
  2. Explore MetaEditor’s Interface: MetaEditor has several main components:
    • Navigator Panel: Lists all available projects, such as EAs, indicators, and scripts.
    • Code Editor: Where you write or edit code. The editor offers syntax highlighting and debugging tools to help you identify and fix errors.
    • Toolbox: This panel provides logs, errors, and compilation messages. Whenever you compile or test your EA, the Toolbox displays detailed feedback on code performance, helping you locate issues or confirm successful compilation.

Step 3: Creating Your First Script in MetaEditor

After setting up the environment, create a new file by selecting “File” > “New,” and choose “Expert Advisor,” “Custom Indicator,” “Script,” or “Library,” depending on what you wish to develop.

  • Expert Advisor (EA): A program that automates trading by executing strategies based on code-defined criteria. EAs can place trades, manage positions, and adapt dynamically to market conditions.
  • Custom Indicator: A user-defined technical indicator for advanced chart analysis. Unlike EAs, indicators don’t trade but help with interpreting price action.
  • Script: A single-use program for executing one-time tasks like opening orders or calculating profit and loss.
  • Library: A collection of reusable functions for frequently used code.

Let’s start our algorithmic trading journey by creating a script. We’ll name it “Script_01”. In the next chapter, we’ll see how to run our first script.
